How to Get Started

Five steps from licensure to your first public sector nursing position.

1

Get Licensed

Pass NCLEX-RN. Apply for California RN license through the California Board of Registered Nursing (BRN). Processing time: 4–12 weeks.

2

Choose Your Track

Decide between correctional, public health, federal, or acute care. Each has different entry requirements, pay scales, and career ladders.

3

Take the Civil Service Exam

For state and county positions, create a CalCareers account and complete the required examination for your classification (e.g., Registered Nurse CF exam).

4

Apply and Interview

Apply through CalCareers, USAJobs, or the county HR portal. Civil service hiring is competitive — prepare with behavioral interview practice.

5

Enroll in Benefits

Enroll in CalPERS (state/county) or FERS (federal). Submit PSLF Employment Certification Form immediately on your first day. Enroll in income-driven repayment if you have student loans.
